Las Vegas Meeting Tops 950

Photo courtesy of Henry E. Stamm IV.The Las Vegas conference, with 952 attendees, set a record for the most attendance since 1995. A delightful welcoming reception at the Atomic Testing Museum and a full slate of fascinating tours to nearby historic and natural sites were organized by David Wrobel’s outstanding local arrangements committee. Special thanks are due the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for financial and material support

Session panels were heavily attended, with the largest numbers at roundtable discussions. The teaching panel had 159 in attendance; the roundtable on “The Future of the Western Past” had 148; and the “Politics of Native American History” roundtable drew 142. Not far behind in numbers was a session and then film screening on the Mountain Meadows Massacre, a session in honor of Alvin Josephy, and a session on popular western history entitled “Beyond the Academy.”.

David Weber introduced President Iris Engstrand to the 240 in attendance for her luncheon address—“Perceptions and Perfection: Picturing the Spanish and Mexican Coastal West.”

Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this meeting a success. We look forward to seeing everyone in Scottsdale.
