Western Writers of America and
National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Awards
 
The Western Writers of America Spur Awards will be given during the Spur Awards Banquet on June 29, 2002 in Wichita, Kansas. Winners include Elmer Kelton for best Western Novel for his The Way of the Coyote; Mark Thompson for Best Nonfiction-Biography for American Character: The Curious Life of Charles Fletcher Loomis; Tom Rea for Best Nonfiction-Contemporary for Bone Wars; Robert Remini for Best Nonfiction-Historical for Andrew Jackson and His Indian Wars; and Dale Walker for Best Short Nonfiction for his Wild West magazine article “Killer of Pain’s Transcontinental Journey.” 

The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s Western Heritage Awards were presented in Oklahoma City on April 20, 2002. Among this years recipients of coveted “Wrangler Awards” are Loren Estleman for Outstanding Western Novel for his The Master Executioner, Dan O’Brien for Outstanding Nonfiction Book for Buffalo for the Broken Heart, Larry Len Peterson for Outstanding Art Book for his Philip R. Goodwin: American’s Sporting and Wildlife Artist, and Sally Denton for Outstanding Magazine Article for her American Heritage piece, “What Happened at Mountain Meadows?”
