Pikes
Peak or Bust!
| Join this year’s Western History Conference at the Sheraton
Hotel in Colorado Springs October 16-19, and spend a long weekend in one
of the most breathtakingly beautiful cities in the country.
The conference begins with the welcoming reception at the Colorado Springs Pioneer’s Museum, housed in the former El Paso County Courthouse. The museum has an excellent view of the most imposing landmark in Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak. The majestic peak was first spotted in 1806 by Lt. Zebulon Pike, who estimated it at over 16,000 feet tall and claimed that no human could climb it. Today, athletes run a marathon to the top, automobiles race along a mostly-paved road, and a cog railway strains up the incline. You can join us on Thursday, October 17th for a ride up the cog railway to see first hand the view that inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write “America, the Beautiful.” If amber waves of grain don’t interest you, tour and dine in one of the world’s premiere resorts, the Broadmoor. Founded by Spencer Penrose, the hotel is almost a city to itself, housing its own power plant, golf course, ski area, and lake, as well as fine restaurants and lodging. We will begin by touring Penrose House, the home of Spencer Penrose near the Broadmoor campus, then tour the hotel, and conclude with dinner at The Tavern. Colorado Springs also is home to many world-class museums, including the Western Museum of Mining and Industry, the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, housed in a building designed by John Gaw Meem. The conference will feature sessions and tours of these museums. No trip to Colorado Springs would be complete without a trip to the mining district. Join us Saturday for a trip to Cripple Creek and Victor, where we will tour the Cresson Mine and downtown Victor. After the tour, the bus will take us to the Garden of the Gods for a chuck wagon dinner. So, mark October 16-19th on your calendars, hitch up your wagons, and get ready to head to Pikes Peak!
