2007 Call for Proposals 47th Annual Conference of the Western History Association Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, October 3-6, 2007 Submission Deadline: August 31, 2006 Crossroads of the West:
Meetings and Exchanges, Old and New The Program Committee for the 2007 Meeting of the Western History Association invites proposals for panels and papers for “Crossroads of the West: Meetings and Exchanges, Old and New.” The association will gather for its annual conference in Oklahoma City October 3-6, 2007, a year that marks the centennial of Oklahoma statehood. Perhaps no other state in the union offers such a diversity of landscapes and cultures. Rugged tree-covered mountains resembling the Appalachians grace the state’s eastern borders, while the southeastern corner, known even today as “Little Dixie” resembles many regions of the Upper South. The tall grass prairie from the Midwest invades the north-central portions of the state, then gradually gives way to the high plains of the western counties. The southwestern quadrant features the rocky cliffs and boulder-strewn gullies of the Wichita Mountains that, along with the Panhandle (once known as “No Man’s Land”), hint at landscapes more familiar in the American Southwest. In a similar vein, the region long has been a crossroads for people, commerce and cultures. Tribal people, both indigenous and those removed from other states and territories, have contested for, or intermingled in, the region. They have been joined by African Americans, Anglo-Americans, and Hispanics to create a population thoroughly American in its multiplicity. Oklahoma long has been an economic crossroad: a region where commerce in trade goods, livestock, oil, and more recently industrial products has flourished. The modern Sooner State is a unique blend of both the Old and the New West, a microcosm of the changing West at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The program committee welcomes papers and panels that reflect this diversity, both in Oklahoma and in the larger American West. We especially welcome papers and panels that explore new interpretations of the western cultural experience, considering issues of ethnicity, race, gender, and the environment. Sessions may follow a traditional scholarly conference format, but we also encourage innovative sessions focusing upon art, film, music, or objects of material culture. In addition, we welcome sessions on teaching western history, and/or teaching the history of ethnic groups whose presence enriches this region. Submissions may be for an entire session, a panel discussion, or an individual paper. When submitting an entire session, include an abstract that outlines the purpose of the session, and designate one panelist or participant as the contact person. Each paper proposal, whether individual or part of a session, should include a one-page abstract and a one page c.v. including the address, phone, and email address for each participant. The committee will assume that all listed individuals have agreed to participate. Send all program submission materials to: L.G. Moses, Department of History, LSW 501, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK 74078-3054 (mos7538@okstate.edu or lgmoses@cox.net). Submissions should be postmarked by 31 August 2006.
