The
Bolton-Cutter Award in Borderlands History
A cash prize of $500 will be awarded annually for the best article on any facet of the history of the Borderlands, construed broadly in terms of conceptualization, chronological scope, and methodological approaches. Essays of synthesis, new interpretations, and focused studies will be considered. Articles will be judged on their scholarly rigor, contribution to the field of Borderlands history, and literary style. If the judges find no manuscript worthy of the prize, no prize will be given that year. Anyone (excepting members of the prize committee) may nominate an essay. A letter of nomination and a copy of the journal, an offprint, or a photocopy of the essay must be submitted to each member of the prize committee (see below). The award is named in honor of Herbert E. Bolton, founder of the school of Borderlands history, and Donald C. Cutter, Sr., a student of Bolton who carried on the tradition of graduate training in this field. To be eligible for the award in 2008, the article must have been published in 2007 in any scholarly journal or edited volume.
