Robert Northcott's research is in philosophy of science and metaphysics, focusing in particular on causation. He has received both a University of Missouri Research Board award and an UMSL Research Award.

Professor Northcott began at University of Missouri-St Louis in Fall 2005. He received his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. He was also a visiting scholar at University of California, San Diego. Before switching to philosophy, he did graduate work in economics, receiving an MSc. Before even that, he began his student days as an undergraduate at Cambridge University studying mathematics and then history.
