Brit Brogaard joined the department in August 2005. Her work falls mainly in the areas of metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of language. She is currently working on the semantics of descriptions. One issue she is particular interested in is whether Russell’s theory of definite descriptions can be extended to definite generic descriptions (as in ‘the dinosaur is extinct’ and ‘the customer is always right’). Her other recent work has revolved around controversies in metaphysics and epistemology including the presentism/eternalism debate, epistemic contextualism vs. invariantism, the question of whether knowledge has more value than mere true belief, and the question of whether Fitch’s paradox of knowability is a paradox for anyone other than the dyed-in-the-wool anti-realist.
