GREAT GETAWAY (September):
This retreat is held each fall for freshman and new students to UMSL. The overnight
trip is a great chance for new students to get to know the staff and officers
at the Newman Center.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL (September):
Get to know your fellow Catholic
students, as well as the CNC staff at the ice cream social.
TEACHING MASS:
Have you ever wondered why we do what we do at mass? That's what this mass is
all about. Throughout the mass we stop and explain what the significance of
each part is.
COFFEE HOUSE (once
or twice each semester):
An opportunity for students to get together and listen to a christian speaker,
discuss issues at a round table and listen to music.
GAME NIGHT (once or
twice each semester):
Get together at the house to play board games.
BUSY PERSONS
RETREAT (January or February):
A retreat that doesn't require an overnight stay. Meet daily for a week with
a spiritual advisor, and commit to 30 minutes of prayer and reflection for the
week of the retreat.
TWILIGHT RETREAT (one
Friday evening each semester):
Enjoy a meal with your friends and then listen to a christian speaker.
PUMPKIN CARVING and
HAUNTED HOUSE (October):
Join in the annual pumpkin carving contest and help build a haunted house in
the Newman House garage for neighborhood kids. Then join us on Halloween night
as the haunted house is open and hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.
WEEKLY OR MONTHLY
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES (throughout the year):
Service opportunities will be announced during mass and listed on the website.
HUNGER AWARENESS WEEK
(March):
Join us for a hunger meal as we discover what meals consist of in less fortunate
countries, and learn about the problem of hunger around the world.
THANKSGIVING
POTLUCK DINNER:
A potluck thanksgiving meal and get together.
CHRISTMAS CAROLING AND
PARTY:
Spend an evening singing caroling
around the neighborhood. Warm up at the Newman Center with some hot chocolate
and cookies.
AWAKENINGS AND GROWTH
RETREATS (October):
The Awakening and Growth Retreats are held over a weekend (Friday-Sunday)
in October. It is a time for you to get away from school and work to pray.
MARDI GRAS PARTY (Fat
Tuesday):
Eat, Eat, Eat! Party before Lent starts!
FAITH-BASED SPEAKER
SERIES (once each semester):
Christian Speaker on campus for students.
SOUP WITH SISTER (every
Friday after 12:05pm Mass and Tuesday after 5:30pm Mass):
Following the Tuesday and Friday mass at the Newman House we cook
up a big batch of soup and enjoy socializing with the sisters of the Good Shepard.
Social Justice
Month (March):
Learn about social justice issues including Hunger and Homelessness during this inspiring and educational month
which includes a homeless shantytown and Urban Plunge.
STRESS RELIEF MASSAGES
(each semester during finals):
During Finals week each semester we offer a night of stress relief back massages
where we bring in certified masseuses to massage away the stress of studying.
ALTERNATIVE SPRING
BREAK SERVICE EXPERIENCE (Spring Break):
For students who stay in town during spring break we offer service opportunities
to participate in during spring break.
RCIA (RITE of CHRISTIAN
INITIATION of ADULTS):
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for students who are not Catholic
but wish to join the catholic church. Classes meet weekly, culminating with
baptism and confirmation at the Easter Vigil Celebration.
EASTER
VIGIL CELEBRATION:
Celebrate
Holy Week with the Newman Center and St. Ann Parish.
RECONCILIATION SERVICES
(once each semester):
Each semester we offer students the opportunity to participate in
reconciliation.
FINAL FLING (May):
At the Final Fling we say good-bye to the seniors and celebrate the completion
of another school year!
MAY SERVICE TRIP (after
finals in May):
Also called the Nazareth Farm Service Trip, this takes place after Finals are
over in May. There are meetings throughout the year to prepare for this trip
as well as fundraisers.
FUN
IN THE SUN (Summer)
An annual tradition at the Newman Center, this overnight
getaway offers swimming, skiing, tubing, and good company.
