History Electives

In addition to the listed requirements, all candidates must complete 12 hours of elective history course work, with no more than six hours of history at the 5000 level. Museum Studies students will take courses distributed in any proportion between the fields of "United States to 1865" and "United States since 1865." Exceptions to this requirement (e.g., selection of courses from another field, such as European or African history) must be approved in advance by both the Director of the Museum Studies Program and the Graduate Coordinator of the History Department. History Department Course Schedule

Most candidates in the Museums Studies program will choose courses dealing with the history of the St. Louis region, as examples of historical analysis that can support the community service mission of museums in this location. However, this emphasis is not required.
