FS 2008-Sociology 1010- Introduction to Sociology Quick Start Syllabus (please be sure to read the entire syllabus, too):

Important Note:  here are students from a variety of “sections” enrolled in this course: a day section (001) meeting Tuesday and Thursday, and evening section (E01) meeting face-to-face on Wednesday evening, an Internet-only section (002), and a Video Instruction Program (VIP) section (V01).  The REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS in these sections are exactly the same.  The only difference for Internet-only students and VIP students is how you will “attend” and participate in the class.  Read the syllabus carefully for details.

Textbooks:

  1. Required: Sociology, 11th edition, Richard Schaefer, McGraw-Hill, 2008. 
  2. Optional (recommended but not required): Primis: Readings in Sociology, Robert Keel, Primis Division, McGraw-Hill, 2005.
  3. There will a variety of "Virtual Handouts" (WWW sites, online essays, and cyber-reports to read and explore) assigned as additional readings throughout the semester.  Accessing some of these handouts will require that you log on to "Roksworld" web site (username: student, password: umsl).

Grading

Final grades will be calculated based on a total of 500 points (525 points possible). Students who submit work past a due date are subject to penalties, point deductions, or not having their work accepted for grading. Items included in calculating the point total:

NOTE: All course grades will be posted in the online Grade book in the class MyGateway site.  Students can access their individual grades via the “My Grades” link located in the “Tools” area of the class MyGateway site.  The grades in MyGateway are for individual tests, quizzes, and assignments only.  The “total points earned” found in the grades area of MyGateway will reflect your final grade.  Final grades will be based on the following scale:
