Transfer Credit Process
Students who are already admitted to an UMSL degree program and would like their transcripts to be evaluated for UM-St. Louis credit must follow the steps below. Please note that not all courses may transfer into UMSL credit, especially those that are technical in nature.1) Inform International Student Services that you would like to have your transcripts evaluated and make an appointment with Ann Ernst at iss@umsl.edu in 261Millenium Student Center (314-516-5229) to fill out the Transfer Credit Request Form (MS Word Version, PDF Version).
2) Provide the following documents:
a) Official transcripts: Transcripts must be mailed directly to UMSL from your university in order to be official. If they are not in English, a translation will be needed as well. The transcript must include the academic years, grades, and credit hours in the American system.
b) A professional, course-by-course evaluation of your credentials may be required if your grades and credit hours are not in the American system or if your documents are not considered official. Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) is a company that specializes in these evaluations. While we will accept ECE's evaluation for grades and credit hours as official, each department still has the authority to determine whether or not those hours can be transferred into UMSL credits.
c)Course descriptions: Descriptions must be in English and preferably sent from your university. Alternatively, they can usually be found on the university's website. You may want to provide your college catalog and syllabi as well in order to give the departments enough information to evaluate your courses.
d) Course descriptions are not always required if the student is only seeking elective credit, however, it is still a good idea to have the descriptions available in case the department requests them.
Once we have received this information, we will send your transcript to Data Entry to be entered in the computer system.
3) We will then send your course descriptions to the appropriate departments for rulings. Each department makes its own rulings.
4) When the evaluations are returned, we will send them to the Degree Audit Department to be entered on your permanent record.
This
can be a long process, so please be patient and feel free to contact Ann Ernst, Academic Advisor, International Student Services, at iss@umsl.edu to check on the status of your transfer credit.
