Aronson Endowed Professor, Modern and Contemporary Art Director, Laumeier
Glen Gentele is the Director of Laumeier Sculpture Park, one of the nation’s premiere open-air museums, located in St. Louis. The sculpture park boasts a collection of contemporary art that includes site-specific and monumental sculptures as well as photographs, drawing, prints, maquettes, books and related collection material. He holds a joint appointment as the Aronson Endowed Professor for Modern + Contemporary Art at the University of Missouri, St. Louis.
As the Aronson Endowed Professor, Gentele provides a bridge to students who seek contact with the director of a major cultural organization matched with experiences in museum practice. He offers courses about topics in contemporary art and provides specialized learning opportunities for students through UM-St. Louis’ internship program. Gentele is a member of the Des Lee Collaborative Vision, a consortium of 35 endowed professors serving at universities throughout the region whose mission is to bring knowledge, expertise and resources to the community through collaboration with civic, cultural, business, educational and governmental organizations.
From 1997 – 2001 Gentele headed the collections department of The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art; a 66-acre cultural complex that includes a museum of art with collections spanning antiquities through contemporary; a Venetian palazzo; and a museum of the circus. While at the Ringling Museum he also served as curator of exhibitions and as adjunct professor at the Ringling School of Art and Design. From 1994 – 1997 Gentele was the registrar/administrative curator for national and international traveling exhibitions at the International Sculpture Center, Washington, D.C.; prior to that Gentele headed the exhibits preparation department and registration department of The Art Museum at Florida International University (The Frost Museum), in Miami, where in collaboration with the Margulies Family Collection he managed the logistics, implementation and installation of the Martin Z. Margulies Sculpture Park on the university campus. Gentele has produced exhibitions by Robert Chambers; Mark di Suvero; Franco Mondini; Christina Shmigel; Sol LeWitt; John Henry; Soo Sunny Park; Joseph Havel; Karyn Olivier; Tobias Putrih and others, as well as several permanent collection exhibitions. His introduction to the work of sculptor John Henry will be published in an upcoming artist catalogue later this year. Gentele earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Florida State University, and his Master of Fine Arts Degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore. Additional studies include a two-year residency fellowship at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Glassell Core Program.
